FRIDAY: Muthafunka Projects in BKLYN

OPENING PARTY FRIDAY, AUGUST 13th @ 6:30pm!!!

Brooklyn born artist, Ethan Rosenduft has been involved in the arts since he was 14 years old. His first passion was in film and television, which has led to a successful career working on sets of feature films and TV shows in and around New York City. Ethan has also been involved in spoken word poetry since 2003. He has participated in regional poetry slams as well as reading at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe and other venues from Miami to Chicago.

Ethan’s main focus in this project was to explore sharp lines and vanishing points. What started as a few small paintings in a book a year ago has quickly progressed into a vast collection on mixed media.

Depoe
Jonathan “Depoe” Villoch’s recent work is based on a fascination with geometric shapes and the color fields found throughout the ever-changing visual landscape. Depoe combines spontaneous color choices with methodical drips to create stark differences in contrast. Abandoning any concern for figurative representation, his ideas and emotions are communicated through visual rhythms and patterns.

PICTURES FROM A WALK
People fascinate me, one of my favorite things to do is to take walks around the city and surrounding suburbs and photograph people going about their daily lives. This activity allows me to meet and interact with people from very different walks of life. It also
allows me to experience how people live and interact with one another on a daily basis.

Walking the streets of New York, I come across many moments that shed light on the human story. I try to capture a sliver of that story that is constantly unfolding in front of me. From a woman walking down a sunny street lost in contemplation, to a homeless person looking on pleadingly as a tourist unaware of his presence snaps a photograph, these are the human dramas I encounter every day.

Take away what you will from these pictures my hope is that they will stay with you long after you have viewed them. If they speak to you on some human level then I’ll have succeeded in my photographic endeavor.

Ian Kevin Curtis (15 July 1956 – 18 May 1980)

Ian Curtis died 30 years ago today. Yes, you know who he was. His band Joy Division is the reason  bands like Interpol, The XX, Crystal Stilts, etc. have a voice.  So pour one out for the Godfather of post-punk and at some point roll down the windows of your car, turn up the dial on your speakers, let the sound spill out of your ear buds and play Love With Tear Us Apart. For Ian, full tilt.

Take a moment to read about Epilepsy, the seizure disorder Curtis suffered from prior to his suicide.

NEW MUSIC: THE HUNDRED IN THE HANDS – THIS DESERT EP

Finally! The EP from the TJO recommended band.

So, so, so friggen good:

This Desert strikes a path that touches on elegant French pop, blissed out dub, house and post-punk. The 6-track EP sets the stage for deeper explorations on a full-length this fall. The Brooklyn-based duo consisting of Jason Friedman and Eleanore Everdell creates emotionally charged and intensely driving music, which harks back to the most classic of dance songs from NYC’s storied underground. The band describes the EP as ”The more ethereal, gauzy side of our tastes; the Summertime-Gothic and dreamy tracks we made thinking they’d go well with open hydrants and looks that kill”. But The Hundred in the Hands self-description belies more than just a dance band. Everdell and Friedman bend and blend styles, sounds and eras into something that doesn’t feel confused, fake or forced. It just feels fun. This Desert EP will follow on the heels of the Dressed in Dresden 12” single. (Amazon)
